Conversing with someone in private is much more meaningful and shows care. It enables both reason for views being heard and rarely will escalate into further matters. From your example above, if a teacher kept students after class and expressed that it is really important to appear to class on time and it's disrespectful for the teacher to appear late, this eliminates negative thoughts since the student understands.
